  14.                           Introduction
  15.      After realizing how convenient the Microsoft Windows 3.0 Task
  16. List application was to access, and yet as to how limited it is in
  17. usefulness, we decided to improve on the concept, and thus created
  18. METZ Task Manager.  METZ Task Manager has the basic tools found in
  19. the Microsoft Task List application as well as several additional
  20. features.
  21.      For your convenience, the license number "MASCOT" will allow you
  22. evaluate this application for a limited time without the usual reminder
  23. screens popping up.
  24.      We apologize for the lack of formal documentation or online help,
  25. fortunately, the METZ File F/X applications do have both.  Also,
  26. you can call METZ Software if you have any questions, problems, or
  27. suggestions (please use our support number: (206) 641-4525).  We will
  28. be glad to help you any way we can.

  30.                              Overview
  31.  
  32.      METZ Task Manager is a comprehensive, yet easily understood
  33. replacement for the Microsoft Task List application.  To install
  34. Task Manager, rename your old Microsoft TASKMAN.EXE to TASKMAN.OLD,
  35. then place the new TASKMAN.EXE and METZ.DLL in your Windows 3.0
  36. directory.  You can then access TaskMan by double clicking on your
  37. Windows background or by pressing Ctrl+Esc.
  38.      Task Manager provides the same basic functionality as the
  39. Microsoft Task List app, as well as the ability to quickly run
  40. programs and files, and a customizeable Tools menu.  Additional Task
  41. Manager features include a fully customizable screen display blanker
  42. (screen saver), Windows arrangement functions, directory tree display,
  43. file finder, point-and-shoot file manager, and system memory and disk
  44. space display.
  45.      Task Manager uses under 30K of memory.
  46.  
  47.                           Installation
  48.      TaskMan should be installed BEFORE you run Windows since the
  49. system can lock up if TaskMan is already running when you replace it.
  50. Please rename or backup your original Microsoft Taskman.exe for safe
  51. keeping.  Copy the new TASKMAN.EXE and METZ.DLL to your Windows 3.0
  52. directory.  Be sure to backup your Microsoft TASKMAN.EXE.
  53.      TaskMan can be used in replacement of the Microsoft Program Manager.
  54. Change the 'shell=progman.exe' setting in the file SYSTEM.INI to
  55. 'shell=taskman.exe'.  When you run TaskMan as the shell, you can still
  56. run an application when starting windows, i.e. WIN NOTEPAD.  TaskMan
  57. will run the application and add it to the TaskMan Run box.  Another
  58. nice feature is that TaskMan will leave you in the directory you were
  59. in before you ran windows, so the TaskMan File Manager will default to
  60. your current DOS directory.  TaskMan will also launch the applications
  61. listed on the LOAD and RUN lines of your WIN.INI file.
  62.      If you decide not to use TaskMan as your shell, add TaskMan to the
  63. load line of your WIN.INI file so that you can use the screen saver
  64. feature and to speed up TaskMan's own initialization process.
  65.      When TaskMan is installed you can access it by double clicking
  66. on the Windows background (desktop) or by pressing Control Escape.

  68.                           Using TaskMan
  69.      Some menu items are greyed while TaskMan is loading directory
  70. information in the background (while other apps are running).  You
  71. can add TaskMan to the Load line of your win.ini to speed up this
  72. process.

  74. IMPORTANT: Running Non-Windows applications from Task Manager may require
  75. an appropriate .PIF file (see the Microsoft Windows User's Guide).

  77.                        Non-registered users
  78.      Use for purposes other than evaluation requires payment of the
  79. registration fee.  Once you register and receive a license number you are
  80. automatically allowed to upgrade to future releases.  It is important
  81. that you register this application to help insure continued support and
  82. development.  Our intention is to provide useful, user-friendly
  83. applications at a low cost, and your support helps make that possible.
  84.      All available functionality is enabled in this version to provide
  85. you the ability to effectively evaluate this application.

  106.                           Release Notes

  108.      METZ.DLL is a dynamic link library for Task Manager. It must be located
  109. somewhere in your environment path.  We recommend placing it in your
  110. Windows directory.

  112.      We have tried to be as consistent with Microsoft Windows interface
  113. specifications as possible.  Please see the Microsoft Windows User's Guide
  114. for more information regarding the Windows interface.

  116.      Your comments and suggestions are always welcome, and help make
  117. this application a better product.  METZ Software relies heavily on
  118. user input, so be sure to give us your suggestions and comments.

  126. *  This application has an implementation which will prevent screen saver
  127.    timeouts while you are working in a DOS application under Windows.
  128.    Other screen savers will timeout even if you are actively
  129.    typing away within a DOS Window.  Our the timeout will occur
  130.    only after you are inactive in any DOS Window as well.
  131.    Please read METZTSR.TXT and install the METZTSR.COM application
  132.    if you wish to prevent timeouts while you are working in a
  133.    DOS Window.
  134. *  TaskMan saves up to 20 items for the run line in a combo
  135.    box.  You can select items in the list by pressing Alt down arrow
  136.    or clicking on the down arrow with the mouse.  The list is saved
  137.    from session to session.
  138. *  You can double click on files listed by the File Finder and
  139.    File Manager to execute or load that file.
  140. *  TaskMan uses the Program= setting in the WIN.INI when searching
  141.    for applications entered on the run line that have no extension.
  142.    For example, if you type COMMAND on the TaskMan run line and press
  143.    enter, TaskMan will append each of the extensions listed in the
  144.    program= section of the WIN.INI, in the order they are listed, in
  145.    an attempt to find the executable filename.  You can change the
  146.    programs= setting in the Setup TaskMan dialog.  For best results
  147.    be sure that the program= settings are listed in order of your
  148.    priority.  We are recommending "programs=exe pif com", add "bat"
  149.    if you wish to run batch files as well.
  150. *  You can override the optimize default area by placing the following
  151.    line in the file TASKMAN.INI:
  152.       optimize=25,55,200,350
  153.    The values are the pixel positions of the optimization area and
  154.    can be set to your preferences.  In the example, 25 is the left
  155.    position, 55 is the top position, 200 is the width, and 350 is
  156.    the height.  When you select Optimize from the Windows menu,
  157.    these coordinates will be used to position the open windows.
  158. *  Optimize can be set to Cascade the windows as well.  Add the word
  159.    cascade to the end of the optimize= line.
  160.       optimize=25,55,200,350,CASCADE
  161.    TaskMan will then Cascade the windows after optimizing them to
  162.    your specifications.

  166.                         Version 1.04
  167. *  The Screen Saver was very sensitive to slight movements of the
  168.    mouse where a minor bump or vibration would deactivate the
  169.    screen saver.  A movement of more than a few pixels by the mouse
  170.    is now required to deactivate the screen saver.
  171. *  If the directory list in the file manager needs to be updated,
  172.    i.e. some other application has changed the directory tree,
  173.    simply select the drive letter from the menu, and it will be
  174.    correctly refreshed.
  175. *  The Task List now ignores Aporia 'icons'.
  176. *  A few users experienced an occasional problem with the task list
  177.    being empty, this has been fixed.
  178. *  The End Task option has been improved to match that of the
  179.    original Microsoft Task List application.
  180. *  An infrequent Screen Saver timeout problem has been fixed.
  181. *  Some performance improvements have been made and technical
  182.    problems have been fixed.
  183. *  The METZ.DLL has been upgraded for future enhancement support.

  185.    and now operate on a wider variety of applications.
